The Navigli district and Porta Ticinese have been important places in Milan for trade and commerce since the Middle Ages . Today this area is the heart of Milan’s nightlife , with many bars and restaurants staying open late into the night to the delight of both locals and visitors .

Navigli is the name of the triangle bounded by Milan Naviglio Grande and the Naviglio Pavese which is headed by the Porta Ticinese dock and covering a large part of the southwestern quadrant of the city .

Only thing you need to do in order to reach there is to take the green line with metro and take off in the stop called Porta Genova , the second alternative is as always the tram if you’d like to enjoy the city sight at the same time in your journey .

Navigli is a charming district where you can made a lot of things : a pleasant walk ,  the typical aperitivo Milanese or just looking at the sunset , this breathtaking view of the canal will long be remembered .

Symbol of Navigli Milan , without a doubt , is the beautiful Vicolo dei Lavandai (alley of the launderer) ; the alley is named after the wash that until the end of the 50’s was used by women to wash clothing and bedding . Why is dedicated to the launderer ? Because in the nieteenth century were the men take care of washing clothes in Milan .

During the summer months is the best period to live the Navigli district , visitors can also take a boat tour for about an hour along the famous canal with boats departing every hour from Alzaia Naviglio Grande ; the can built between 1177 and 1257 , it is more than 50 kilometers long and was primarily used for transporting goods , such as blocks of marble for the city’s marvellous buildings in former times. Mercato Coperto MilanOne of the best place in in the district to eat is the Mercato Metropolitano or di Porta Genova in Valenza street 2 . It is a space that extends for about 15 thousand square meters and is like Farmer’s Market with street food in former warehouses of the railway Porta Genova , is open every day from early morning until late night . The Mercato of Porta Genova will come back in Navigli District on Spring .
